ESH Leadership Message

When Lockheed Martin established its Target Zero safety initiative and set a goal in 2003 to reduce injuries by 50 percent in five years, many people doubted it could be done. But at the end of 2008, not only had we achieved our goal, we were confident enough in our people and our processes to set another 50 percent reduction goal by 2012.

These high standards extend to our Go Green program as well, where our ultimate target is eliminating adverse environmental impact from our operations. To move us closer to that target, we’ve looked ahead and set aggressive absolute reduction goals through 2012. By absolute reduction, we mean that our goals are based on 2007 performance and that we're committed to meeting the specific percentages of reduction we’ve set — even if Lockheed Martin business grows and prompts an increase in usage. With that in mind, we’ve set long-term absolute reduction goals through 2012 to reduce carbon emissions, waste to landfill and water usage — all by 25 percent.

Reducing injuries and environmental impact never happens by simply willing it to be so. It requires robust practice, dedicated people and buy-in from every corner of the enterprise. At Lockheed Martin, we have adopted an ESH structure that establishes clear polices and provides effective tools and guidance from the corporate level. At the same time, we enable business units to harness their innovative ideas and expertise to design and implement ESH solutions that are best for their operations. We also reach out to community groups and establish partnerships that protect and enhance the quality of life in the cities and towns where we do business.

At Lockheed Martin, we regard protecting the environment and the health and the well-being of employees, neighbors and customers as being of paramount importance, and we encourage everyone to do the same.
